The first time walking into a gym can be pretty daunting, especially if you’re new to the world of health and fitness. Some gyms give inductions but these are usually just so you know how to use the machines and general health and safety of the gym. So even after being given the ok to start working out it can be hard to know exactly what to do.
Back when I first started going to the gym I had no idea what I was doing. I would run on the treadmill for 30 – 40 mins, hop on the cross trainer for 20 mins, maybe use the row machine, do a little ab routine, then leave and go home. So yes, we have all been there, everyone is a newbie at some point and everyone has to start somewhere. Here are a few things that can help if you’re new to the gym…
Ask for help
Personal trainers and fitness consultants are there to help you. If you approach a personal trainer in a gym for advice about how to use a certain machine or how to squat properly, it would be very strange for them to say no sorry I can’t help. Wer’e here to help, we want to help, don’t be scared to ask!
Join some classes
The first step I took to learn a little bit more about fitness was to join some classes. Not only do you learn new exercises, use equipment you might have never seen before, but it can also become quite social as you’re around so many others which makes exercise even more fun. Once you find a class you enjoy that fits in with your routine try and stick with it, as it could be something you look forward to every week!
Professionals on social media
Whilst social media does have some flaws, there can be many benefits from using such platforms like Instagram, Facebook and youtube, (providing you follow the right people in the industry). If you know someone is qualified learn from them, watch workout videos, technique tips, join in with live classes, etc. Just be careful about getting advice and copying someones workout if they’re not qualified, as you don’t always know if they’re doing it correctly. However there are plenty of free workouts online from many professionals, that you can also do at home as well as in the gym.
Many people I speak to that are new to fitness always ask how often they should go to the gym. It is completely up to you, however, definitely make sure it’s a regular thing, and when I say regular I mean every week, at least 2-3 times. You don’t have to use the gym for every workout you do, but gym or no gym exercise and keeping active should be consistent. If you struggle to get into the habit and routine, just start small, once a week, then build up from there until you find what suits you and your lifestyle!
I always get in the habit of making a plan before I go to the gym. Otherwise I get there and just faff around doing this, doing that, basically wasting time. A good way to plan? Notes app on your phone! Its so simple, you can write a plan down on there anytime, anywhere, and save it so you can do the same workout again.
